Mount Kilimanjaro (Kilimanjaro, Kili) is the highest mountain in Africa, with a height of 5895 meters above sea level and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The vegetation on Kilimanjaro varies according to the altitude, from tropical rainforest to arctic conditions. Up to a height of 2700 meters, elephants, buffalo, antelopes and rare leopards could once be found. Today, there are several species of monkeys and rare hornbills to be observed. All other animals are rarely seen in the dense rainforest. Next, you reach a moorland landscape. In this unique vegetation zone, you can see extremely rare giant lobelias and other exotic plant species. Above 3900 meters, you reach the alpine desert or a zone inhospitable to life. Occasional signs warn you that there is a water shortage here. The last zone is still partially controlled by ice and snow and offers a wonderful view from the roof of Africa.
In contrast to other snow-covered mountains in the world, Kili is a technically easy mountain to climb. For a successful climb you need good trekking equipment, good food (especially plenty of fluids) and a good portion of will and determination. You should plan at least 7 days for the climb (Machame Route, Lemosho Route). Other tours (Marangu Route, Rongai Route, Kikileva Route) usually take 6 days. Additional days for better acclimatization are recommended, as this increases the likelihood of a successful climb. For special routes, such as the Kilimanjaro climb with crater overnight stay, Northern Circuit (circumnavigation of Kilimanjaro) or the Kilimanjaro climb via the Northern Ice Fields, you should plan at least 8 days.
Your Kilimanjaro support team, which will lead you up the mountain, consists of at least one mountain guide, a cook and 2 to 3 porters per guest. The different routes and the number of guests may mean that more staff is needed. This is always decided by the ranger at the respective gate. The porters will carry around 17 to 18 kilograms. The guests' luggage (around 12 kg), tents, cooking equipment and their own things!
The Marangu route is known as the most "comfortable" route because you stay in huts. On other Kilimanjaro routes you stay in tents. These tours are more like a camping tour. The porters will cover the distance much faster so that you will meet a fully set up camp.
Mount Kilimanjaro is operated by the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA) and its headquarters are in Marangu. The climb usually begins between 10 and 12 noon at the respective gate of the Kili National Park. First the mountaineering groups are registered, the park fees are paid and only then does their Kilimanjaro adventure begin. Please observe the national park regulations, especially the environmental aspects! At the end of the successful climb you will receive a certificate from KINAPA.
Kilimanjaro has been successfully climbed by people of various ages, from 6 to over 80, sometimes with special permits. To climb, you should be at least 12 years old. Extraordinary achievements and records can be read at the Marangu Gate and Machame Gate.
