Safari Tanzania - Mkomazi NP

Safari im Mkomazi Nationalpark

The relatively small but wonderful national park is located in the north of Tanzania, on the border with Kenya at the Tsavo National Park and has a truly impressive wilderness to offer.

The Mkomazi NP is ideally explored on a day safari from/to Moshi or on a drive from Moshi towards Dar es Salaam, including an overnight stay in a lodge in the nearby Usambara Mountains.

Ideal after climbing Kilimanjaro and especially for observing the famous black rhinos up close.

Mkomazi is located at the southern tip of the Sahel zone, a classic dry area with nyika bushes, many baobab trees and some rocky hills. But there are also savannah forests with acacias and flat grasslands. Ideal for a pleasant biodiversity.

Birdwatchers will be in for a treat here, as there are around 400 recorded bird species to observe, including northern dryland species such as Shelley's glossy starling and Tchagra jamesi, hornbills, weaver birds, martial eagles and purple Eurasian hoopoe. Mkomazi NP is the only place in Tanzania where you might see the striking vulturine guineafowl. Large birds such as ostrich, Kori bustard, secretary bird and southern hornbill are also common here.

But many other well-known wild animals of Tanzania can also be seen there, such as giraffes, antelopes, kudus, impalas and grand gazelles. They share the park with elephants, buffaloes and numerous predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs. With a bit of luck you will also see dik diks, zebras, wildebeests, elands and topi. And with a lot of luck you will occasionally see lions, hyenas, leopards or even the protected wild dogs in the morning or evening.
